A recent poll conducted by the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging reveals a significant trend among older Americans: money worries dominate their list of health-related concerns. The findings shed light on the challe nges faced by seniors from diverse backgrounds when it comes to healthcare costs and financial security.

Key Concerns Unveiled

The poll, supported by AARP and Michigan Medicine, highlights that five out of the six top health-related concerns among people over 50 are linked to the financial burden of healthcare. These concerns include worries about the cost of medical care, assisted living expenses, prescription medicine costs, health insurance or Medicare expenses, and dental care costs. Additionally, concerns about scams and fraud targeting seniors also revolve around financial safety.

What’s striking is that these concerns resonate across all demographics — regardless of age, gender, race, income level, or political ideology. The rising costs of healthcare and associated financial challenges affect seniors nationwide, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions.

While healthcare costs dominate, the poll also uncovers other important concerns such as access to quality care, social isolation, and racial or ethnic discrimination. Women express higher levels of concern about home care quality and social isolation compared to men.
