I have something to share with you: I’ve always struggled with sticking to a consistent workout routine. While I enjoy running, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and strength training, I find it challenging to consistently wake up early for these activities. However, my routine changed last week, and it’s all thanks to the Custom Plans feature in the Apple Fitness app.
Apple introduced Custom Plans in its Fitness app with the release of iOS 17 last fall. This feature allows users to create personalized workout plans tailored to their preferences. You can select the days of the week, total workout time, plan duration, and specific activities you want to include. You can even choose your favorite trainers and music for added personalization.
Once your Custom Plan is set up, it appears at the top of the Fitness+ page in the Fitness app, displaying your daily workouts and a weekly view of your exercise schedule.
Initially, I didn’t expect much from this feature, but it turned out to be a game-changer for me. My biggest challenge in working out has always been deciding what to do. With the vast library of exercises available in Apple Fitness+, I often feel overwhelmed and end up postponing my workout.
Custom Plans solved this problem by providing a preselected list of workouts for each day. When I wake up in the morning, I simply get dressed, fill my water bottle, and head to the gym. Upon arrival, I open the Apple Fitness app and start the workout for that day without worrying about choosing the “right” exercise.
The workouts Apple suggests for me are diverse and well-rounded. For instance, my upper-body strength training and core workout on Tuesday were followed by a treadmill and core day on Wednesday, and a longer total-body workout on Thursday.

Of course, the question remains: Will I maintain this routine in the long term? Only time will tell. As of now, I’m enjoying every moment of my five-week plan.
