How Neem Flower Extract May Impact Ovulation and Fertility

Antifertility effects of Neem flower extract usually have been a debated topic. One recent study reveals that the alcoholic extract of Neem flowers may interfere with the reproductive cycle. It actually prolongs the diestrus phase and reduces the frequency of ovulation. The disruption hence suggests a potential impact on fertility. The same was observed with other Neem derivatives like leaves, seeds and oils.

However, opinions in fertility are divided with respect to the role of neem. Some studies support its antifertility effects while others report little to no impact. Some researchers have come down to a conclusion that there is no effect of Neem oil on ovarian function. Some indicate that Neem flower extract may block key processes such as the luteinizing hormone surge.

One recent research revealed a decline in the number of healthy ovarian follicles in rats who were treated with the extract. It means that the natural growth and selection of follicles were disrupted and likely due to hormonal interference. Follicular growth depends on a complex balance of hormones and other local factors. This is the reason that any disruption can significantly affect ovulation.

Neem is often also cited for its anti-implantation or pregnancy-disrupting effects. No evidence of such outcomes was found in treated rats in a recent study. The extract did alter the ovulation patterns and the fetuses in treated animals were healthy with no significant differences compared to the control group.

Toxicity is another area of concern. The treated rats in the recent study experienced side effects like diarrhea, but there were no deaths. The outcome contrasts with earlier studies which reported high mortality rates in animals treated with Neem derivatives.
